Houston Student Killed by Freight Train in Dangerous Stretch of Tracks

By Pottroff & Karlin LLC |

(Houston, Texas – December 10, 2024)

A Houston teenage student was tragically killed Monday morning at about 7:30 am while walking to school at Milby High School. The student was struck by a freight train around 2000 Broadway Street near Galveston Road in Houston, Texas. The Houston Police Department have not yet released the name of the student, but said the victim was a 10th-grade Milby High School student.

The section of train tracks where this tragedy occurred is known in the local community to be extremely dangerous. Local residents report pedestrian students cross the tracks all the time on their way to and from school. Local residents have complained about the dangerousness of the tracks for years, but local students are forced to cross them because it was the only means of commuting to school if you are a pedestrian.

Texas ranks second among all states in pedestrian-train collisions, according to the Federal Railroad Administration. Last year, there were 178 pedestrian-train collisions in Texas, resulting in 75 deaths.

Police said the train was traveling at a slow speed, when the 10th grade student Monday was hit and killed.

The Houston Police Department is still investigating this tragedy.
