(Sharon Township, Ohio – November 6, 2011)

A 19-year-old male motorist from Copley, OH died early Sunday morning about 1:35 A.M. at the crossing of Wheeling & Lake Erie Railway tracks and South Medina Line Road in Sharon Twp., OH. The victim’s car collided with the 80th car of a 159-car W&LE freight train with freight cars were without reflectorization which made it difficult , if not impossible, to see.

There are no crossing gates, which might have prevented the accident, at the railroad crossing, however the crossing is equipped with flashing lights, but no word was given as to whether they were operating properly or not. Wesley Danko’s 2005 Chevrolet Silverado was knocked to the right side of the road, over a cement culvert , and into a shallow creek, where it caught fire.

The victim was transported to Medina Hospital by Sharon Fire & Rescue, but was pronounced dead on arrival. The family asked that memorials be made to The Angels on Track Foundation, who actively support the families of railroad crossing victims.
