Elderly Kansas Woman Dies When Hit By Train at Crossing

(Wellington, Kansas – June 25, 2011)

An elderly female pedestrian with no identification was struck and killed at the South Washington Street crossing of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway at 8:50 Saturday morning when she waited for a westbound train to pass only to be hit by a train from the opposite direction.

Wellington Police Sgt. John Defore said that “The pedestrian waited for the first train.  Her view possibly could have been obstructed by the first train, so she may not have seen the second one, unfortunately, until it was too late.”  The slow-moving eastbound freight train was in the process of making a stop in Wellington when it struck and killed the victim.
