Driver Injured, Ticketed at Non-Gated Crossing Accident with Union Pacific Train

(Le Mars, Iowa – July 7, 2012)

A 17-year-old resident of Marcus, IA was seriously injured Saturday evening when she turned off Business Highway 75 and directly into the path of an oncoming Union Pacific freight train at the non-gated crossing of 12th Street Southwest and UPRR tracks in Le Mars, IA.

Krystal Leach had her 2006 Ford Taurus struck on the passenger side by the train’s locomotive, which finally stopped about a quarter mile from the scene after knocking the victim’s car into a crossing signal.

Leach was initially transported to Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, IA before being taken to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, IA where she was admitted in “good” condition.

Police issued the victim a ticket for failure to stop for a train even though there are no crossing gates at the crossing to keep motor vehicles and trains apart. The accident was the fourth recorded at the UPRR/12th Street SW intersection, which does have lights and bells.
