CSX Train Derails, Takes Down Power Poles, Damages Bridge

(Niles, Ohio – July 30, 2011)

A 50-car CSX Railroad intermodal (trailers and containers on flatcars) train derailed 15 of its cars directly below the 5th Street Bridge Saturday about 3:00 P.M. in Niles, OH. The train was bound for Maryland from Chicago, and the accident both clipped electrical power lines as well as caused serious damage to the bridge, shutting down both automotive and pedestrian traffic across the main thoroughfare. Officials offered no explanation as to the possible cause of the disaster, and claimed the investigation could take several days to weeks to conduct and complete.
