County Employee Seriously Injured by CP Train at Dangerous, Unguarded Crossing
(Jesup, Iowa – January 28, 2013)
A Black Hawk County, IA employee suffered multiple injuries Monday morning near Jesup, IA when he drove the county-owned road grader he was operating south across Canadian National railroad tracks at the dangerous, unguarded crossing of South Nesbitt Road, and was hit by a westbound CNR freight train.
Rick Wermerskirchen, 51, of Waterloo, IA was transported to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo for treatment of what were defined as non-life-threatening injuries.
The intersection is “protected” solely by standard railroad crossbucks and completely lacks flashing lights, crossing gates and bells that probably would have been helpful in preventing the accident.
The Black Hawk County Sheriff’s Office was handling the investigation into the accident.
