(Smithville, Georgia – October 9, 2011)
Three occupants of a 2000 Chevrolet Impala narrowly escaped possible death Sunday night about 9:45 P.M. when they fled from their stalled auto as a CSX freight train bore down upon it at the Clark Avenue crossing of CSX Railroad tracks in Smithville, GA.
The driver, Lashina Shanette Burns, 29, of Americus, GA, said the car stalled as she crossed the tracks, and attempts to restart it failed before one of her two passengers heard an approaching train. She abandoned further attempts to start her vehicle, and all three occupants escaped without injury before the train hit and demolished the car.
Smithville Police and CSX officials are investigating the collision.
