California Pedestrian Killed by BNSF Freight Train In Escalon
(Escalon, California – October 28, 2024)
A California man was fatally struck by a westbound moving train in San Joaquin County last Monday morning. The tragic incident occurred near Taco Bell at the Highway 120 and Yosemite Avenue crossing on BNSF Railroad tracks. According to reports, the collision occurred shortly after 10 a.m. The Escalon Police Department confirmed the fatality. The victim has since been identified as 52-year-old Dana Brown, of Escalon.
It is also still unknown how fast the train was approaching the individual on the tracks and investigations are ongoing to understand the circumstances leading up to the event.
Based on BNSF submitted data, the crossing where this collision took place sees a daily average of 34 trains that travel over this crossing at an average speed of 79 miles per hour. Additionally, according to Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) statistics, California ranks number one among states in total pedestrian casualties as of 2023. In 2023, there were 324 pedestrian/train casualties in California, with 190 deaths and 134 injuries. The next closest state, Texas, had 146 fewer casualties.
The Escalon Police Department are investigating this collision.
