California Motorist Killed, Passenger Seriously Injured at Dangerous, Unguarded Union Pacific Crossing
(Selma, California – August 21, 2019)
One Californian was killed and a second victim was seriously injured when the victims’ SUV was struck and demolished by a Union Pacific freight train. The collision occurred at an unguarded private crossing near midtown Selma, CA Wednesday morning about 10:34 AM, PDT. The private crossing’s location was south of Front Street and Golden State Boulevard in Selma.
Escolastica Andres, 64, of Reedley, CA was pronounced deceased at the scene, while the vehicle’s other occupant, who was not described by investigating law enforcement officers by name, age, gender or place of residence, was taken to and admitted at a local hospital.
The Union Pacific single track crossing did not have any active warning devices, such as lights and gates or other low cost active warning devices to provide warning to motorists of the daily average of 14 Union Pacific trains which operate at speeds as high as 60 mph.
