(Caldwell, Texas – October 9, 2011)

A Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train derailed a dozen cars as it passed above Texas Highway 36 in Caldwell, TX, overturning eight of the cars and shutting down the highway about 8:00 P.M. Sunday night.

Chief concern of emergency responders was the fact that, of the four derailed cars which remained upright, one was a tank car of extremely hazardous sulfuric acid, and a temporary evacuation of nearby homes and businesses was conducted by personnel from the Burleson County Sheriff’s Office.

The train was traveling from Temple, TX to Beaumont, TX, and BNSF officials could offer no cause of the derailment, but did re-open Highway 36 early Monday.
