Amtrak Kills Two at Dangerous, Unguarded CSX South Carolina Crossing
(Cheraw, South Carolina – June 20, 2011)
Two Cheraw, SC public works dept. employees were killed about 7:45 A.M. Monday morning when their pickup truck was struck by an Amtrak passenger train travelling on CSX Railroad tracks at the dangerous, unguarded East Market Street crossing in the Chesterfield County community.
According to the Chesterfiel County Coroner’s Office, Barney Driggers, 57, and Glenn Locklear, 52, were killed instantly as they drove the Public Works truck across CSX Railroad tracks. The two-lane, paved grade crossing is heavily enshrouded with trees and other foliage, and has passive crossbucks and stop signs, but no electronic warning of approaching trains. South Carolina Highway Patrol troopers are investigating the tragedy.
