(Bucyrus, Kansas – June 12, 2011)

A yet-to-be-identified 45-year-old man was critically injured early Sunday morning when his 1994 Plymouth sedan collided with a Union Pacific train at the 223rd Street crossing of UPRR tracks in Bucyrus, KS.

Miami County Sheriff’s Dept. officers were still trying to determine what the victim’s car was doing facing south on the crossing as the northbound train appeared about 3:23 A.M., but said the driver was attempting to exit his vehicle as the train struck it, entrapping him beneath the wreckage of his car.  The man was transported to the Overland Park Regional Hospital in nearby Overland Park, KS.  The crossing was equipped with lights and gates, but no report on the proper functioning of them was made.
