BNSF Coal Train Derails, Shuts Down Major Missouri County Artery
(Caruthersville, Missouri – June 21, 2012)
A 135-carBurlington Northern Santa Fe coal train derailed 29 cars near Caruthersville, MO early Thursday morning about 3:00 A.M., forcing Pemiscot County Sheriff’s officers to close County Highway 208, a main county thoroughfare, to traffic.
No cause for the derailment was offered by BNSF officials, but the accident resulted in a number of trains being either halted or re-routed while contract derailment crews attempted to clear the railroad for traffic and eventually allow the re-opening of the highway.
Although television news media reports said the utility-owned coal hopper cars were being “re-railed”, video footage of the action showed the cars being torn apart and cast asunder by the heavy construction equipment rather than being placed back on the rails for repair and return to service.
